Tasmanian logistics company fined $45k over fish deaths

A Tasmanian transport company has been fined $45,000 after it polluted a creek in the state’s northwest, killing fish.

Monson Logistics pleaded guilty in the Hobart Magistrates Court to breaching environmental laws, and was on Thursday slapped with the fine.

The pollution happened in November 2019, when a commercial truck-washing detergent went into Cooee Creek near Burnie on the island’s northwest coast.

The state’s Environment Protection Authority investigated, and found a clear link between the detergent and the death of fish in the creek.

Monson Logistics’ punishment was a timely reminder companies have a duty not to pollute the environment, the regulator said on Thursday.

Along with consequences such as the death of wildlife, pollution could have longer-lasting impacts on waterways, the authority said.

The regulator thanked the community for bringing incidents like the one involving the Tasmanian logistics business to its attention.

Monson Logistics declined to comment on the matter.
