New South Wales’ highly successful Return and Earn scheme has reached an impressive milestone, with 12 billion drink containers recycled since its launch in 2017.

The scheme, designed to reduce litter and encourage recycling, has seen widespread participation across the state, contributing significantly to environmental conservation efforts.

Environment Minister Penny Sharpe celebrated the achievement, noting the profound impact the program has had on reducing waste and promoting sustainability. “Return and Earn has been a game-changer for recycling in NSW,” Sharpe said. “Reaching 12 billion containers is a testament to the community’s commitment to protecting our environment.”

Since its inception, the Return and Earn scheme has provided residents with the opportunity to return eligible drink containers for a 10-cent refund at more than 620 collection points across the state. The program has not only helped to reduce litter but has also played a crucial role in fostering a culture of recycling and environmental responsibility.

According to Sharpe, the success of the scheme has also translated into significant benefits for community groups, charities, and schools, which have raised over $44 million through donations and fundraising initiatives linked to the program. “This program is not just about recycling; it’s about supporting communities and making a real difference,” she added.

The environmental impact has been substantial, with the program estimated to have reduced drink container litter by 52% in NSW. The scheme’s success has also inspired similar initiatives in other states and territories, further amplifying its positive effects.

Looking ahead, the NSW Government is committed to building on the success of Return and Earn, with plans to expand the program and increase the range of eligible containers. “We are determined to keep NSW at the forefront of recycling innovation,” Sharpe said.

The 12 billion containers milestone marks a significant step towards a cleaner, more sustainable future for New South Wales, with the Return and Earn program at the heart of this transformation.
