The Alpha Sapphire project, which aims to manufacture and market synthetic sapphire growth technology in Australia, has made significant progress, according to Alpha HPA Limited.
The ASX-recorded company revealed the completion of the support framework and utilities for the initial two manufactured sapphire growth units, known as Phase A, at its HPA facility in Gladstone, QLD.
Besides, the appearance of synthetic sapphire framing and heater bodies nearby means a crucial step towards commissioning, with installation currently in progress.
A significant development is that the technology partner, Ebner-Fametec, has discovered exceptional purity levels in the most recent batch of crystal growth that exceed 99.999 percent (5N) as determined by GDMS analysis.
The project’s potential for success is highlighted by this outcome, as well as the favourable colour and minimal imperfections of the sapphire crystal.
Alpha has proactively started the supply of follow-on feedstock to Ebner-Fametec for different sapphire boule developments, further driving the project forward.
Alpha’s Managing Director Rimas Kairaitis expressed fulfilment with the progression of the Alpha Sapphire business, featuring the excursion towards delivering the main manufactured sapphire in Australia as a huge achievement in laying out sovereign, high-esteem downstream sapphire limit with regards to providing critical high-technology markets.
“We are focussed on capturing this unique opportunity with funding in place to scale rapidly into sapphire growth to meet the expected demand from the adoption mini-LED and micro-LED displays and the ability to supply sapphire sourced from a secure jurisdiction, grown with renewable power and fed with our own low-carbon HPA feedstock,” said Kairaitis.
Alpha HPA said the engineering group is persistently propelling site layouts paired with site selection, guaranteeing consistent coordination and functional proficiency.
