Amazon Australia announced Friday, 30 October plans to open a second Melbourne fulfilment centre (FC) by late 2021, with construction currently underway in Ravenhall, Melbourne.
The FC is set to increase delivery speed for a wider selection of products for Victorian customers, and once finished, will create around 300 jobs. As construction goes on, this will also generate an additional 200 construction jobs.
The new Ravenhall FC will be 37,000 square meters, or about twice the size of the Melbourne Cricket Ground, and has the capacity to store up to six million items ranging from health and personal care products, books, pantry food and drink staples, to larger items such as flatscreen TVs and gardening equipment.
ln a move that will more than double Amazon’s operational footprint in Victoria, which will allow the company to satisfy growing customer demand, the Ravenhall FC will join Amazon’s first Australian FC in Dandenong South, which opened back in 2017.
The expanded capacity will also help the company and its sellers to increase the proportion of items that can be shipped directly to customers in Victorial, as well as increase deliver speed.
“We have invested significantly in our Victorian operations this year to ensure we can continue to improve delivery promises to customers in the state. Our investment in this new Melbourne fulfilment centre will benefit customers around Victoria, while creating hundreds of jobs for Melbournians in a safe work environment, with competitive pay at a time when they are needed most,” said Craig Fuller, Director of Operations, Amazon Australia.
According to Fuller, this fulfilment centre will also provide additional capacity for Victorian-based small and medium sized businesses who utilise the Fulfilment By Amazon service to benefit from their expanded capability and seamlessly serve customers across the country.
