Digital infrastructure company Equinix has unveiled a new US$54 milllion data centre in Perth as part of its expansion of Platform Equinix.

The new International Business Exchange™ (IBX) facility, to be named P3, will enable the US company to meet growing demand for digital infrastructure and low-latency networking capabilities in Western Australia among global and local organisations.

P3 will be Equinix’s third data centre in Perth and its 18th in Australia.

The expansion was prompted by Perth’s growing importance as a strategic part of Australia’s internet infrastructure.

“We’re thrilled to continue an exciting growth period for Equinix with the planned addition of the PE3 IBX in Perth,” said Guy Danskine, Managing Director, Equinix Australia.

“Since entering Western Australia almost three years ago, we’ve seen substantial growth driven by the state’s digital economy,” he said.

Danskine continued that the interconnection options available in PE3 will support their customers during their digital transformation journeys as they move their businesses closer to the edge and look to expand within Asia-Pacific and beyond.

Once open, the facility will provide access to more than 1,045 companies, including 215 networks and 395 cloud providers, who utilise Platform Equinix in Australia.

The company said Perth’s advantage lies in its direct connectivity to Southeast Asia via two subsea cable links, the Australia Singapore Cable and Indigo Cable. Both cables terminate directly inside the Equinix Perth campus, reducing the time it takes for data to move between Singapore and Australia by 50%.

With Australia and Singapore signing a Digital Economy Agreement to promote digital trade between the two countries, Equinix’s data centres in Perth are well placed to connect Australian organisations to Asia and global markets.

A third subsea cable is being built that will connect Perth to Oman, providing a second digital gateway to international markets.

The first phase of PE3 is due to open in Q4 2021.
