NSW gov’t advances supply chain reforms to address problematic plastics

The NSW Government has taken significant steps to address problematic plastics as part of its efforts to create a cleaner, safer environment.

The initiative focuses on introducing new reforms aimed at reducing harmful plastic waste across the state and encouraging sustainable alternatives.

These changes build on the state’s earlier actions to phase out single-use plastics, further protecting public health and reducing environmental pollution.

The reforms will support businesses in transitioning to environmentally friendly packaging and reduce reliance on fossil fuel-based products. The government is seeking input from industry stakeholders and the public to ensure these changes are implemented effectively.

NSW Premier Chris Minns stated, “We’re committed to making sure future generations inherit a healthier planet, and these reforms are an important step in tackling plastic pollution across the supply chain.”

The initiative also encourages manufacturers to adopt sustainable materials and designs. By addressing the entire life cycle of plastic products, from production to disposal, the government aims to reduce waste in landfills and plastic pollution in waterways significantly.

NSW Environment Minister Penny Sharpe highlighted the importance of reducing the harmful impacts of plastic waste, adding, “We need to focus on sustainable solutions that work for our environment, our communities, and future generations.”

The consultation process invites input from individuals, businesses, and environmental groups to ensure that the reforms are both practical and impactful. The government plans to finalise the reforms later this year.
