WA seeks proposals for Pilbara transmission to unlock green energy

The Western Australian government has called for proposals to develop a transmission network in the Pilbara region, which would play a key role in unlocking the area’s renewable energy potential.

The initiative, driven by the state’s focus on clean energy, aims to connect the region’s vast industrial zones with sustainable energy sources.

Minister for Energy Bill Johnston emphasised the importance of this project in supporting WA’s green energy transition. He said, “The Pilbara is home to many of the world’s largest industrial players… and decarbonising them is critical to our future.”

The transmission project is expected to boost renewable energy generation in the region significantly. Enhancing the infrastructure could enable large-scale clean energy projects, including wind and solar farms, to supply power to energy-intensive industries such as mining and manufacturing.

The network will facilitate the distribution of clean energy, reducing carbon emissions and fostering sustainable economic development in the state.

Proposals will focus on infrastructure that can transmit power generated from renewable sources to key industrial areas, including plans for energy storage solutions.

The WA government has positioned the Pilbara region as a key player in the global shift to green energy, with the transmission project being a step toward securing a cleaner energy future.

This initiative aligns with the state’s broader ambitions of decarbonising major industries and supporting the creation of green hydrogen hubs, further solidifying WA’s leadership in the renewable energy sector.

Proposals are being accepted from local and international firms, and the transmission network is anticipated to play a pivotal role in transforming the Pilbara into a global renewable energy powerhouse.
