Maritime Industry Australia Limited (MIAL), Australia’s only national peak shipping industry body, has appointed Angela Gillham as the new Chief Executive Officer to lead the organisation.

She will commence her new role at MIAL on July 1, after being an integral part of the organisation for the past 19 years including five years as deputy CEO.

MIAL said the announcement follows the resignation of outgoing chief Teresa Lloyd, who will join Carnival Australia in the new role of Chief Strategy and External Affairs Officer.

Lloyd resigns after almost 20 years of service, wherein she represented Australia’s shipping industry on behalf of MIAL’s 78 members.

During this time, MIAL said she has led the organisation through extensive shipping reforms, navigated significant changes to the industry including the boom of the offshore and the COVID crew change crisis, among her various achievements.

Most recently, she secured bipartisan support to arrest the decline of Australian flagged ships. Soon to be legislated under the incoming Albanese Government, this is slated to have a profound and long-lasting impact on the industry and nation’s security.

“The decline in Australian shipping is an existential issue for all Australians, not just the Australian shipping industry. A matter of national security, not industry security,” Lloyd said in a LinkedIn post.

“That’s why, over the past few months, we have redoubled our efforts and worked tirelessly to secure bi-partisan commitment to increase our nation’s sovereign shipping capability,” she continued.

In a separate post, Lloyd also took to LinkedIn to congratulate Gillham on her latest appointment.

“I am also pleased to share with you my close colleague and well-respected leader, Angela Gillham has been successfully appointed to the role of CEO,” she wrote.

“She is the right person to lead MIAL. Someone I have turned to, been guided by, and taken advice from every step of my journey throughout the years.”

According to MIAL, Gillham has a proven track record of delivering outcomes of vital importance.

“A highly respected industry leader and expert in marine biosecurity, she is steadfast in her agenda for action on decarbonisation and ensuring the shipping industry remains viable,” the organisation said in a statement.

MIAL also congratulated Lloyd for her outstanding contribution to the shipping industry and wishes her all the best for the future.
