Assistant Minister for Road Safety and Freight Transport Scott Buchholz has congratulated the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications’ National Freight Data Hub after it received the Intelligent Transport System (ITS) Australia Excellence in Transport Data Award.

This award recognises an organisation’s contribution in the use of transport data to deliver outstanding outcomes for the community.

The Hub is a result of the federal government’s $16.5 million investment to provide a new way for industry and governments to share and use freight data.

Buchholz said the award is an extraordinary achievement for all involved.

“The Hub will be a trusted source of freight data for industry, government and others to improve the efficiency, safety and resilience of the freight sector,” Buchholz said.

“Once completed, it will highlight important information about freight on land, sea and air including traffic volumes and congestion; road condition and rest area usage — all of which support more efficient freight delivery and safer transport outcomes for freight operators,” he said.

“The award-winning Hub prototype, developed in conjunction with Nova (formerly Geoplex), invites the public to explore the data currently accessible and provide feedback on website experience.”

Buchholz said that freight operators, producers and customers will benefit from the insights generated into how and where freight is being moved, where the delays are and where the opportunities are to become more globally competitive.

“A huge congratulations and thank you to those who were involved in producing the Hub, including the Department, all staff, Nova and all cross-industry stakeholders,” he said.

“I look forward to following the progress of the Hub as it works to improve the quality and accessibility of freight data.”

ITS Australia is the peak body for advanced transport technology in Australia seeking new and innovative ways to bring freight and transport technology into the future.
