Sustainable manufacturer Biotuff offers small businesses simple ways to reduce carbon footprint in their operations.

Simple ways for small business to reduce carbon footprint

Reducing CO2 emissions and landfill waste is an eco-friendly business model when considering a more sustainable future. However, with many large businesses now implementing impressive changes to help create a better future, it has left smaller-sized companies needing to catch up on the best approach.

“The great news is there are some straightforward steps all businesses can take to reduce their carbon footprint without the massive overheads,” said Nadia Steele from Biotuff .

“With some clever thinking, all businesses – large or small, can make a real impact on their carbon footprint and their impact on the environment,” Steele said

Reduce Packaging Wastage

One of the easiest ways for small businesses to make an eco-friendly impact is to consider their packaging waste.

“Switching to an environmentally friendly packaging option or choosing reusable containers is one way small businesses can become more environmentally conscious,” Steele said.

“Also, look out for recyclable packaging materials. This can drastically reduce the amount of waste a company produces,” she said.

Compostable and biodegradable mail packs are an excellent alternative to the plastic bubble packs available to small businesses.

“These are made from renewable sources and can add a statement for many businesses who want to showcase their dedication to our environment,” Steele said.

“Today, many businesses love to partner with those making eco-friendly statements with their day-to-day operations, so having a strong environmental policy in your workplace can often open up good relationships with your customers and clients.”

Get Organised – Recycling

The best way to cut costs with office recycling is to get organised.

“With all office recycling, it’s a case of making it easy,” Steele said.

“Having well-organised recycling stations for the different materials will make it easy for your staff to recycle and reduce your landfill waste,” she said.

Also, check if you can access FOGO collections and encourage kitchen waste to be recycled into golden soil.

Steele continued that it can be as simple as printing a few instructions, having ample well-labelled bins around for different recyclables, and composting bin in the kitchen.

Reduce Your Water

It’s time to flick the dishwashers into eco mode and ensure you only put them on when it is 100 per cent full.

“Basic changes such as this can impact not only the amount of power and water you use, but it can also help your carbon footprint,” Steele explained,

If you need new appliances for the workplace, consider supporting and purchasing energy-efficient models. This can save your business money on water and power consumption and help our precious earth.

“Don’t forget about the bathroom! Using dual flushing toilets and low flushing modes can also have an impact,” she said.

Environmental Policies

Now is the perfect time to develop or fine-tune your workplace environmental policy. From increasing your recycling and utilising energy-efficient lighting to becoming more conscious of the amount of waste your produce or the amount of water/power you are consuming.

“This time of year is perfect for business owners to sit down and brainstorm how their business can become more environmentally friendly,” Steele suggested.

“It doesn’t need to be difficult or expensive. The smallest changes can significantly affect the environment and how we impact our earth,” she concluded.
