Queensland’s initiative to bring back train manufacturing inside the state is picking up pace with a $30 million investment from Hyundai Rotem, an accomplice of Downer.

The Hyundai Rotem Corporation is set to lay out a devoted local presence on the Fraser Coast, getting an industrial site with plans to build an industrial facility for delivering sub-parts essential for train car bodies.

Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey expressed appreciation for Hyundai Rotem’s expanded interest in the steel roll framing office, noticing that the obligation to bring train manufacturing to Queensland keeps on drawing in extra ventures.

“This project will train a new generation of highly skilled Queensland workers in train manufacturing, which will have long-term benefits to our economy, transport infrastructure and manufacturing industry,” Bailey said.

The company will utilise roll shaping, a strategy including the consistent bowing of a long piece of sheet metal, normally coiled steel, to make sub-parts for train car bodies.

While these parts have generally been made abroad, the Queensland Government’s obligation to renew train manufacturing in Maryborough is bringing this process back home, prompting the production of 20 extra job positions.

Steve Kakavas, Downer’s Head of Rail and Travel Systems, itemised the development activities in progress, illustrating errands, such as installing site workplaces, directing geotechnical testing, and associating administrations like water and power, vegetation clearance, and bulk earthworks.

Hyundai Rotem CEO Yong-Bae Lee gave bits of knowledge into the functional course of events for Hyundai Rotem’s Maryborough factory, noticing its expected commencement in 2025.

“Queensland does not currently have roll forming capability, and such components have historically been made overseas. We believe this investment strengthens Queensland’s rail manufacturing capabilities while creating new jobs in the region,” Lee said.
